I've been working for 35 years as a business owner and independent contractor – mostly working on floors. I couldn't afford to get myself an individual plan so for years I had health insurance through my wife. Then we divorced and I lost that health insurance. I tried to buy a plan again but it was just too expensive. They said I had a “pre-existing” condition and would have to run a ton of tests if I wanted to buy insurance through any of those companies. Even then, the cheapest plan would almost $22,000 a year for me! Who can afford that?
