I'm an uninsured student. I'm also an asthmatic, which makes health care really expensive for me. I had it for a while and then I couldn't afford it anymore, so I had to go without it. I have several medications that I am supposed to take in order to avoid asthma attacks, but I couldn't afford them either. I ended up having a really bad attack and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. I didn't want to take it and ended up with $60,000 in debt. I mean, I was having an attack and tried to get an alternative mode of transportation to the hospital because I knew the ambulance ride was going to cost an arm and a leg. No one should look at a medical emergency that way. Now I'm still in school, studying public health ironically, and I've had to claim bankruptcy because of my medical debt.
