I am a direct support care giver for people with disabilities who provides health care services but does not have her own health insurance. Although it is available through work, the cost is very high and the cap on the plan is so low that one hospital stay would be used up and probably put me into debt. I choose to pay out-of-pocket, but because of service refusal and week long waits I have often ended up using emergency rooms. I have high blood pressure and only one kidney which gives me a series of infections. When I receive the emergency room bills I choose not to open them until I think I might be able to pay some of it-but this system is just unsustainable.
